Christmas in the tropics always seems a little off. In the cold we need lights, warmth, shiny dresses and crisp ginger cookies to forget frozen toes and salted sidewalks through the dark winter. In the heat, decorations feel out of place, but I like these alternatives. A clever poster does the trick, and if you must have a fake tree, choose white like my mom.
Inevitably I spend money on travel, instead of things—right now I'm in Baler, Philippines. It's lovely, kind of. But here's a greedy list anyway...
a simple raincoat and galoshes to match
a butter-soft leather jacket
classic sunglasses (SLB, please)
a cargo bike
Nigel Slater's real food
a Tivoli radio
and I wouldn't kick a kindle out of bed
